(Graduate Certificate in English with Academic and Professional Skills).
Entry Requirements
Undergraduate
Most Chinese school-leavers will have completed 12 years of full-time education, whereas British school-leavers will have completed 13. The majority of Chinese applicants for undergraduate courses are therefore required to study for an extra year at foundation level and have the appropriate level of English language before being accepted onto a course. This may be a one year foundation course in China or the UK, for example, or an equivalent course such as an A level programme or BTEC course.
The Northern Consortium
Sheffield Hallam University is one of the founding partners of the Northern Consortium UK (NCUK). NCUK established the International Foundation Year (IFY) programme which is accepted by NCUK partner universities for entry onto undergraduate courses. The IFY consists of subject modules which prepare students for degrees in a wide range of subjects, including Business, Science and Engineering. Elements include English for Academic Purposes and key skills. The IFY is offered at a number of centres around the world, including the following Chinese cities: Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Qingdao, Wuhan, Shanghai, Changsha, Beijing and Suzhou. Students who pass the IFY programme are guaranteed a place at one of the partner universities. Since its formation in 1987, NCUK has helped more than 8250 students study in the UK. For more information see NCUK's website (www.ncuk.ac.uk).
The International Access Scheme
The University also recommends a number of foundation courses provided by UK Further Education colleges. We have teamed up with some colleges to offer the International Access Scheme. The courses offered are detailed at www.shu.ac.uk/international/foundation and usually offer combined study of academic English and subject knowledge. Students who progress to an undergraduate course at Sheffield Hallam University from one of the colleges listed here will receive an International Access bursary of £500 during their first year of study.
Postgraduate
Chinese students who have completed a four year degree in China or an undergraduate degree in the UK will usually be eligible to apply for a postgraduate course, providing they meet English language and subject knowledge requirements. Students who have completed shorter courses such as a three year diploma may be required to take a pre-masters course before being offered a place.
Graduate Diplomas
Sheffield Hallam University offers four courses aimed at international students who do not meet the minimum requirements for a postgraduate course: the Graduate Diploma in Computing and English, the Graduate Diploma in Engineering and English, the Graduate Diploma in Media and English and the Graduate Diploma in Art, Design and English.
The Graduate Diploma courses incorporate the Graduate Certificate in English with Academic and Professional Skills and study of subject specific modules. This allows you to improve your English language proficiency, and academic and professional skills required for your masters course.
NCUK Pre-Masters Programme
As described above, NCUK also provide a Pre-Masters Programme (PMP) at Chinese centres in Chengdu, Qingdao, Wuhan, Beijing and Shanghai. The PMP can be 3, 6 or 9 months in duration depending on the prior qualifications and English language proficiency of a student. Core elements include English for Academic Purposes and Learning Skills. Successful completion of the course guarantees a place at one of the NCUK partner universities.
Work experience
We may waive the need for some qualifications if you are over 21 and have substantial work experience (preferably 2 years) at an appropriate level in a relevant field.
For full details of individual course requirements see our online prospectus, www.shu.ac.uk/courses. For advice on whether you are qualified to take a particular course contact the University's Admissions Department, admissions@shu.ac.uk (undergraduate queries) or our Course Advice and Information Team, course-info@shu.ac.uk (postgraduate queries).
English language
Most of our undergraduate courses require an IELTS score of 6.0, TOEFL computer-based score of 233, or equivalent. Postgraduate courses require a minimum of IELTS 6.0 and many have a higher requirement. You can take the IELTS examination at testing centres in China, or here at the University if you wish to study English in the UK before you start your course. The Pre-Sessional Course in Academic English which runs over the summer months is aimed at international students who are starting their studies in September, and develops skills which allow you to participate in all aspects of University life. For details of English language courses see our TESOL Centre website at www.shu.ac.uk/tesol.
Even if you have achieved the required IELTS score you may have concerns that you will have difficulties in speaking or understanding English when you arrive. Once in the UK, however, you will find it easier to learn as you will be getting a lot of practice! Even if you are with some other Chinese students on your course you will be using English when dealing with University staff, doing your shopping and getting around the city. Your speaking and listening skills will develop quickly.
If you find yourself struggling - get help! The University English Scheme provides free English language support and is open to all international students. If your course allows, you can take an option in English for Academic Purposes which will award you 20 credits towards your degree on successful completion. You can also make an appointment with the Language Advisory Service to go over particular pieces of work, or use Drop-In Language Support.
